A new political party has announced its formation here one week after the main Opposition Party, the SLP, categorically declared its readiness for the next general elections. The Party, The Lucian Peoples Movement says it plans to give the St. Lucian electorate a decent and credible alternative at the polls, constitutionally due in December of 2011. The Party is spearheaded by the two men who recently resigned from the United Workers Party; Therold Prudent and Franklin McDonald. A former UWI economics lecturer and Professor at Medgar Evers College in New York, Dr. Julian Best, is the third co-chairperson. There are other co-chairpersons including a number of women who have asked to remain anonymous for now, says Mr. McDonald. The LPM has chosen the bell as its party symbol and green as its rallying colour. Interim Chairman, Franklin McDonald explains that the Party chose the bell as its symbol because the time has come for the leaders of this country to summon the youth to action, to summon their spirit, their courage and their strength to work for a better and more peaceful St. Lucia. A St. Lucia free of crime and drugs and homicides and murders. The Lucian Peoples Movement, he says, will be ringing the bell for change, for freedom, for respect, good governance and democracy all over St. Lucia. Mr. Prudent, explains that the Party chose the colour green because it is the only colour that does not run. And the LPM does not intend to run away from any issue, discussion, debate or challenge. The Party will talk to, debate, and work with any group, organization, and all persons of goodwill who are willing to promote the cause of changing the social and economic landscape of this country. The Movement will launch its website this Saturday, 6th February, in which it explains its aims, hopes and goals for a better and more prosperous St. Lucia. Following this release, the Party will be launched in the soonest possible time, says the interim Co-chairman. Mr. Prudent says The LPM stands for truth in government, vision in leadership and prudence in the use of the government’s financial resources. He says the Party intends to win the hearts, minds and votes of the St. Lucian people by campaigning on and modeling these simple, civic virtues. He intimated that from the reports, surveys and responses the party has been receiving, both private and public, The Movement seems to be enjoying widespread approval and support from a cross-section of the general public. Franklin McDonald says the Movement will be offering something different in this crucial election. He says the party believes that the hands that prepared the Last Supper should have a seat at the table of governance in St. Lucia. And, The Lucian Peoples Movement will make every effort to give the women of this country, their rightful place at the table of governance.
