The selection and endorsement of Dr.Desmond Long as the Anse La Raye/Canaries candidate for the St.Lucia Labour Party in the upcoming general elections has drawn stiff criticism from a body calling itself, the Concerned Citizens Group of Anse La Raye/Canaries.

The Group says it strongly objects to the manner in which Dr.Long also known as Pep was chosen. According to the group, the St.Lucia Labour Party and its leader, Dr.Kenny Anthony have treated the constituency like a garbage bin, discarding the opinions of supporters and constituents. According to the group, the SLP is responsible for the victory of Dr.Keith Mondesir at the last polls because the Party brazenly undermined former MP Cyprian Lansiquot by subjecting him to a run off. President of the Group, Hilary Frederick says it is unbelievable that the SLP by passed three sons of the soil, in the persons of Jude Regis, Hermangild Francis and Cyprian Lansiquot, all well qualified and respected, to bring in Dr.Long, a man who has no ties to the constituency. The group has vowed to vehemently protest the decision.  He says Dr.Anthony has an insatiable appetite for Doctors and intellectuals ignoring the contributions of the ordinary man. Mr.Frederick says on Saturday 13th March, the Concerned Citizens Group of Anse La Raye/Canaries will hold a public meeting to sensitize residents in preparation for future protest action.

The St.Lucia Employers Federation has expressed concern about the effect the current water shortage is having on its members, particularly in the north of the Island. The Federation notes that the crisis is affecting all sectors of the economy but says it is especially costly to employers who must bear the burden of the additional cost of trucking water to their premises while being unable to adjust their prices to recover these costs. In addition, the organization claims, employers have been granting time off to staff on compassionate grounds, so that they can collect water at home when it is available. A situation, the Federation says that is further increasing the cost of operation for businesses. According to the organization, the situation is a wake up call because for too long the authorities have procrastinated over the future of WASCO. The country it says, must make a commitment to improving the operations of WASCO. The Employers Federation believes WASCO can be as viable as LUCELEC, if given the same kind of attention by government. The group has suggested that if government structures the deal right, St.Lucians will be more than willing to invest in WASCO, by buying shares. The Federation says while the government is still trying to figure out the solution to privatization and managing the drought, it calls on all employers to adhere to the water emergency declaration.
