2010 women's High Jump bronze medalist Levern Spencer will lead Saint Lucia's 32-member team to this month's XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This is by far Saint Lucia's biggest team ever to the Commonwealth Games. In 2010, 13 Saint Lucian athletes travelled to New Delhi, India, when Spencer was the only athlete to climb the podium.
This year's athletics contingent includes heptathlete Makeba Alcide and high jumper Jeanelle Scheper, the Caribbean junior record holder. Three sprinters will travel: Corneil Lionel, Rosen Daniel and Talberc Poleon. Javelin thrower Albert Reynolds returns to the Games, where he finished ninth in 2010. NCAA Division 3 champion Rick Valcin is set to compete in Pole Vault.
Saint Lucia will again be represented in boxing, swimming and table tennis. Commonwealth Games veterans Omarie Ferdinand, Jedaiah Pierre and Chris Wells will be joined by Adrian Albert for the table tennis team competition.
The boxing group comprises England-based Ryan Charles, a 91kg heavyweight. Lyndell Marcellin will contest the 64kg light welter-weight class. Ron Bastien goes in the 69kg welterweight division and Arthur Langelier is down to fight as a 75kg middleweight. In swimming, USA-based Joshua Runako Daniel and Jordan Augier will compete.
Veteran goal attack Shem Maxwell leads Zalika Paul, OECS Under-23 MVP Ianna Hippolyte, Denise Charles, Chattany Justin, Germaine Altifois-Fenelon, Indira Laurencia-Roachford, Roxanne Snyder, Rommela Hunte, Delia Samuel, Judie Mathurin and Saphia William as Saint Lucia's first-ever netball team at these Games.
The other sport that was not represented in 2010 is shooting, in which Lennox Mondesir and Arthur Scott will compete. Absent from the sports in which Saint Lucia was represented in New Delhi are cycling and tennis. Saint Lucia has been participating in the Commonwealth Games since 1962.
