Reports of police officers abusing their powers in the line of duty are nothing new- not even in Saint Lucia. While the public looks up to the police to uphold law and order, there continues to be those officers who taint a bad picture for the entire police force. President of the Police Welfare Association, Travis Chicot believes that while there are challenges within the force which affect how officers perform their duties, they must remain civil in the execution of those duties.
Chicot was directly addressing an incident brought up by a concerned citizen where an officer was seen abusing his powers of arrest. According to him, these are the very incidents which cause civilians to lose trust in the Police.
A Police Ambassador Program is being looked at to train officers in customer service, as a means of restoring the confidence of civilians in the Police.
